Gamma Knife, Harley Street
We were appointed by a specialist medical contractor to assist in the installation of a gamma knife. The project presented some major challenges as the equipment is housed in a disused bank vault. The installation involved the removal of a portion of the ground floor structure sufficient to install the equipment. The isotope used in gamma knife surgery is Cobalt 60. This isotope is particularly attractive to terrorist organisations as it is the source material for a cobalt bomb, a theoretically feasible but extremely 'dirty' form of nuclear weapon. Additional security measures had to be designed into the scheme to combat any potential threat posed by anyone trying to obtain the isotope.
